My name is Thomas. I’m a PhD student in Geography at the National University of Singapore, from Toronto, Canada.

My research interests lie at the crossroads of critical human geography, cultural labour, queer studies, and decolonial perspectives on Taiwan and Inter-Asia studies. I focus on the connections between cultural labour, space, social reproduction, and the social and political possibilities that emerge around art when anti-capitalist and anti-colonial frameworks are centred.

My current doctoral research focuses on alternative cultural spaces in Taiwan. My study explores how cultural workers develop and maintain gathering and art-making spaces amidst economic challenges and increasing government investment in culture, which plays a role in shaping Taiwan’s national identity. By investigating how cultural spaces and non-capitalist forms of cultural labour resist commodification and integration into mainstream political agendas, I hope to support an urban (geo)politics that is more capacious and critical, and that can contest the status quo.

I also convene the Queer and Trans Study Group. The group engages the theoretical and methodological possibilities of queer and trans thought when “Asia” is not treated as a fixed geographical category.

Apart from this, I enjoy making and mixing electronic music, woodblock printing, playing city builder games, and hiking.

我是 Thomas（劉夢飛），來自加拿大多倫多，目前在新加坡國立大學地理系攻讀博士學位。

我的研究興趣交會於批判人文地理、文化勞動、酷兒研究，以及從去殖民視角出發的臺灣與跨亞洲研究。目前的博士研究聚焦於臺灣的另類文化空間。我關注文化工作者如何在經濟不穩定，以及政府日益透過文化投入形塑臺灣國家認同的背景下，建立並維繫讓人們聚集、創作與實踐藝術的空間。我也試圖理解，文化空間與非資本主義形式的文化勞動，如何抵抗商品化，以及被納入主流政治議程的過程。透過這項研究，我希望思考一種更具開放性與批判性的都市（地理）政治，使我們得以挑戰既有的社會與政治秩序，並想像其他可能。
