Queer & Trans Study Group

The Queer & Trans Study Group brings together graduate students, junior scholars, and supportive senior scholars to read and discuss work in queer and trans studies across Asia, the Pacific, and the Indian Ocean worlds. The group takes as its starting point critiques of the Euro-American foundations of queer theory and asks how Asian histories, political economies, languages, and colonial formations might reshape the field’s concepts and methods. Through established and emerging scholarship, we examine questions of gender and sexuality alongside labour, migration, race, capitalism, empire, and social reproduction, while treating “Asia” not as a fixed geographical category but as a site of methodological and theoretical inquiry. Meetings are held one to two Fridays each month in-person and online, and are open to participants regardless of institutional affiliation or location.
